Henri-Émile-Benoit Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He was the main figure of the artistic movement called Fauvism. Together with Picasso, he is one of the artists who most influenced the development of art in the second half of the 20th century. One of Matisse's most important contributions to the history of art was his belief that the color of the subject in a painting need not match its actual coloration.
