The French painter Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), who lived mostly in the 19th century and is also called the "father of modern art", was an important artist, especially for his paintings of landscapes. He traveled to Paris to study painting, where he remained for the rest of his life. He sought to achieve a synthesis of realistic representation, personal expression and abstract pictorial order. Of the artists of his generation, Cézanne probably had the greatest influence on 20th-century art.
