Five Facts About: Audrey Hepburn

20. 06. 2016

Many know her from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), My Fair Lady (1964) and Roman Holiday (1953). The actress, style icon and philanthropist was born in Brussels, Belgium, and was known for her kind and charming character. She had a humble reputation and dedicated her career to philanthropy later in life. She passed away due to cancer in 1993, but the world will never forget this marvelous actress.

1. The famous “little black dress” she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was designed by Hubert de Givenchy and is considered as one of the most famous LBDs. She was the designer’s best friend and muse. In 2006, one of the two copies of the original dress was auctioned at Christie’s in London and purchased anonymously over the phone for an impressive £467,200.

2. She was an EGOT. This means that she won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. There are only 12 others that have had this honour.

3. She was very self conscious about her US size 10 feet. She often wore 10.5 sized ballet flats to mask her foot size. Her ballet flats became a part of her signature look: black turtleneck, slim black trousers, and, of course, ballet flats.

4. She confessed to having to eat tulip bulbs and trying to bake grass into bread during the hard times in WWII. In 1990, a new white tulip hybrid was named after her in honour of her acting career and lifelong work with UNICEF.

5. She was fluent in English, Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian. She was raised speaking English and Dutch, which resulted in her unique accent. Her multilingual skills were very helpful during her contact with press, especially when she turned to humanitarian work later in her life.
