The Kiss
The Kiss is an oil painting with the addition of gold leaf, silver and platinum, painted in 1907-8, at the height of what is known as the 'Golden Age'. The robes of the entwined figures are decorated in a style influenced by contemporary Art Nouveau and the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement. The painting now hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna and is considered a masterpiece of Viennese Art Nouveau. It is considered by many to be Klimt's most important artwork.
Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was a well-known Austrian painter, designer and artist who lived mainly in Vienna at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was involved in the decoration of the art-historical museum in Vienna, followed by other commissions. Four allegories on the ceiling of the Sturany Palace in Vienna, decoration of the ceiling of the spa house in Karlovy Vary, decoration of the Villa Hermes - the country residence of Empress Elisabeth. Freud's doctrine of the unconscious and human sexuality, which also appeared in many of his works, was growing in strength at this time. The paintings are full of expressive lines, flowing hair, flowers, geometric patterns and mythical themes.
