Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is one of the most famous 19th century artists in the world. He was born in Holland but spent most of his life in Paris. His style of painting fits most prominently among the Fauvists or Expressionists – he was also one of the founders of Expressionism, which was just emerging at the time. Van Gogh himself, however, felt more like a post-impressionist, his favourite technique was also pointillism, which left a strong mark on his style. Landscapes, portraits or still lifes and Sunflowers were his favourite motifs.
